~ Inclusive Growth: Most Complex and Challenging Airport Construction Project In The World

India’s problems are complex & challenging. Obviously, solutions must be unique & innovative. Watch (& read) how India had accepted challenge to build world’s biggest airport terminal at same active/running Mumbai International Airport without cancelling a single flight! Not only they could succeed but also turned the challenge into 2 billion dollar opportunity!

Understanding India through this project: This project is a perfect example how Indians tackle challenges, try to find local (Jugaad) customized solutions without disturbing the core essence (inclusiveness) and do well.

Indians  need to adopt this approach  in every challenges they face in other fields like – irrigation, city planning, farming, energy, roads, railways, educations, economy , etc.

Inclusive growth project: You have to consult and convince everyone around those who are directly or indirectly involved in the project. Convincing lots of government departments, clearances, environment clearances, etc. Relocating nearby slums (if required)  to other places after negotiations (most complex part of project in democratic India).

Unique challenges in this project: Mumbai Terminal T2 project is different and more complex than other airports in US,UK,Europe, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, etc.

Mr. G.V.S. Reddy, Developer of this project said it right while describing complexity of this project –

“This project is like conducting an open heart surgery on a marathon runner, when he is in the middle of marathon”

They had large dedicated space before start of project without any disturbance during construction unlike at Mumbai where there is only 20- 25% space available for the project compare to all above country’s airports and also Mumbai’s busiest & active airport is functioning at same site!

What Indians (or other emerging country) can learn:  I think the experience team is gaining is outstanding and difficult to get in other similar projects.Team will gain so much of tacit & technical knowledge after completion of this complex project, which will also give them confident for their all future projects. “YES WE CAN” booster! Project highlights:

  • Single largest terminal in the world
  • 4 storey structure and it will be called T2 terminal at Mumbai Airport
  • Terminal T2 will handle extra 36000 flights per year than current capacity
  • Innovative X Shaped design to accommodate more Gates (Planes)
  • Innovative state of Art Design of Y-shaped pillars with Steel structure at top to hold largest fibre structure with natural lighting
  • After this project, capacity of Mumbai’s airport will be around 45 million passengers  per year
  • Both Domestic and International Airport will be facilitated at same place after completion; which will help connecting passengers
  • Project Cost: $2 Billion
  • 12000 construction people are working on this project
  • Developer (Build & Operate model) : GVK Group ,an Indian private company
  • To be built on existing airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the world?, without stopping any running activities
  • Technical challenges- How to shift overhead structures without using cranes? Solutions- new slide-structures had to build which is one of design innovations by L&T Construction Company.

This new terminal will be open for public most probably from Dec-2013. When next time you will use this terminal at Mumbai Airport, remember all these guys who worked so much hard to give us a world class terminal!
