~ India’s Invisible Innovations!

Is India already a hub for Global innovation/ R&D?? Prof . Nirmalya Kumar, a management guru from London Business School is revealing surprizing details about how Innovations done by Indians go unnoticed as they are working for foreign multinational companies and thus credit obviously goes to country where Head Office of company is based. So,  we never realize who are inventing these products and from which location of the world. This process is roughly referred as Invisible Innovation.

Following four types of Invisible Innovations are happening in India that Prof.Kumar discussed in talk:
1. Innovation for Business Customers
2. Outsourcing Innovation
3. Process innovation
4. Management innovations

~ Inclusive Growth: Most Complex and Challenging Airport Construction Project In The World

India’s problems are complex & challenging. Obviously, solutions must be unique & innovative. Watch (& read) how India had accepted challenge to build world’s biggest airport terminal at same active/running Mumbai International Airport without cancelling a single flight! Not only they could succeed but also turned the challenge into 2 billion dollar opportunity!

Understanding India through this project: This project is a perfect example how Indians tackle challenges, try to find local (Jugaad) customized solutions without disturbing the core essence (inclusiveness) and do well.

Indians  need to adopt this approach  in every challenges they face in other fields like – irrigation, city planning, farming, energy, roads, railways, educations, economy , etc.

Inclusive growth project: You have to consult and convince everyone around those who are directly or indirectly involved in the project. Convincing lots of government departments, clearances, environment clearances, etc. Relocating nearby slums (if required)  to other places after negotiations (most complex part of project in democratic India).

“Inclusive and Sustainable Growth is a key to success in this century!”

Unique challenges in this project: Mumbai Terminal T2 project is different and more complex than other airports in US,UK,Europe, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, etc.

Mr. G.V.S. Reddy, Developer of this project said it right while describing complexity of this project –

“This project is like conducting an open heart surgery on a marathon runner, when he is in the middle of marathon”

They had large dedicated space before start of project without any disturbance during construction unlike at Mumbai where there is only 20- 25% space available for the project compare to all above country’s airports and also Mumbai’s busiest & active airport is functioning at same site!

What Indians (or other emerging country) can learn:  I think the experience team is gaining is outstanding and difficult to get in other similar projects.Team will gain so much of tacit & technical knowledge after completion of this complex project, which will also give them confident for their all future projects. “YES WE CAN” booster! Also, how to Turn Challenges in life to Opportunities!

Watch Full Documentary on Mumbai’s New Airport (Build It Bigger-Discovery)

Project highlights:

  • Both Domestic and International Airport will be facilitated at same place after completion; which will help connecting passengers
  • Project Cost: $2 Billion
  • 12000 construction people are working on this project
  • Developer (Build & Operate model) : GVK Group ,an Indian private company
  • To be built on existing airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the world?, without stopping any running activities
  • Technical challenges- How to shift overhead structures without using cranes? Solutions- new slide-structures had to build which is one of design innovations by L&T Construction Company.

~ Mumbai Dabbawala (Tiffin) Service: System That Challenged Six-Sigma Management Standards!

Mumbai Dabbawala is world’s most efficient (tiffin supply chain) delivery service.   Just 5000 Dabbawallas (persons) every day collects & deliver over 200,000 lunch boxes at DIFFERENT  locations and return back empty tiffin from where it was collected (over 400,000 transactions per day) with zero or less than one mistake (99.999999 accuracy)  i.e. beating Six-Sigma Standards without using any technology/computers and high skilled management executives!!

Mumbai Dabbewala Busy In Boarding Tiffin Boxes At Local Train

Dabbawala (‘Dabba’ means Tiffin in local  Marathi language and ‘wala’ means person) service, is awarded ISO 9001:2001 for quality management system standards and also received many national/International awards.

Dabbawalas do this job as Seva/Sewa , Inexpensive Selfless Service to Community and therefore they are respected in society.

Most of the Dabbawala have just high school certificates and not even a degree! They are successful on the basis of their Jugaad Innovation , discipline, common faith, team work, selfless service attitude(seva), helping each other, time management, hard work, using available resources, finding solutions to local challenges, and amazing business instincts.

Dabbawala never used any hi-fi management techniques, MBA executives, or books. Actually its the other way, now a days many reputed Business/Supply Chain Management institutes from India or Abroad are studying and training their executives to learn from Dabbawala using Computers and Technologies!!

Harvard university (Mumbai’s model of service excellence)  ,Cornell university (Mumbai Dabbawala Network)  and other reputed international institutes have already recognized it as excellent management and team work service.

Therefore, it’s just a myth that only reputed university management graduate can be a successful businessman, entrepreneur or service/supply chain executive!! Isn’t it??
